NHK Pacts With Canadian, Dutch Producers on World War II Drama

The TV co-production with Don Carmody Television and FATT Productions about events in the Pacific during and after the global conflict is set to start shooting later this year.
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK is pacting with Canadian partner Don Carmody Television and The Netherland’s FATT Productions on a Second World War TV drama.
The co-production is timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The story, to be shot mainly in English and to treat sensitive issues surrounding the conflict, will be based on historical findings uncovered by NHK after a decade-long investigation into events in the Pacific during and after the Second World War.
“As we approach the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, we are reminded that there is still a lot of work to be done in uncovering forgotten stories of the past, especially those that had significant impact on our lives today,” Toru Takagi, senior director of NHK, said in a statement Tuesday.
There’s no word on cast for the co-production, to be drawn from actors out of Japan, North America, and Europe.
The project is set to start production later this year, with a delivery scheduled for August 2015.
The script for the TV drama, now in development, will be written by a team of international writers using recently discovered documents and survivor testimony.
NHK will collaborate with Don Carmody Television, a division of Don Carmody Productions, best known for movie co-productions like the RESIDENT EVIL and SILENT HILL film franchises, and FATT Productions, whose credits include the Academy Award-winning film ANTONIA’S LINE.
Don Carmody, president of Don Carmody Television, in his own statement said the historical project will “explore the dilemmas and agony these horrible scenarios and decisions people both sides of the war in the Pacific were unfortunately tasked to make.”
David Cormican will produce for Don Carmody Television.
